Since im using Vista im not sure where to go on XP.But the way i would do it is:
1.find Device Manager
2.click on display properties button
3.click on driver tab
4.click uninstall driver
5.after uninstalling driver,click install driver
Why im not sure? After reinstalling my windows i have some drivers that are from 2006 and i know that there are newer drivers, but whenever i try to update them it says that my drivers are up to date.then i tried uinstalling and installing it and so i got the same driver as i had(seems like a random Vistas problem).
The best thing to do is to have some program that updates driveres itself or refer to your device manufacterer for latest drivers.
Any more questions?

What kind of chipset do you have in ur video card?
Earlier you have said that your Ram drops below 5,so i suggest u stop some processes that you dont need,if you have any...(ex:when i start my comp it is using 500-700RAM and running 80 processes, which 1/3 of them i dont use)
2.you can increae your page file size(which might help a little)

It will be hard for me explain, since we are using dif operation systems, but ill try.First of all try typing it in help and support it might tell you and direct you where you need to go.If that doesnt work this is the way i do it on my comp 1.go to Sys Properties 2.click Advanced 3.click change virtual memory(minimum should be 300+the amount of RAM)
Virtual mem is mem the comp is using to store data on comp if you run out of RAM.Of course it is much slower than RAM,but it should help(little).

Ok,I changed the minimum and maximum of C and D-300-512.Perhaps the games freezed, because there wasn't a paging file in D(where my game is)?

What kind of chipset(in your video card) do you have? Are you sure that you have changed D(I would make 700 my min)Dont expect it to help much, since it is a lot slower than RAM....In your case the best thing to do is to add RAM and a new video card
If you have any questions you can ask

Kinda correct. Virtual Memory is memory that runs from the Hard Drive space. When you have little or no RAM left, then Virtual Memory will kick in. It isn't recommended that you try to get Virtual Memory though, since that is if you have little to no avaliable RAM.

Quote: Has anyone been able to play HoMM V with an Intel 82865G graphics card?
I did a search at the ubi tech forum and all the posts talked about the game crashing on start up with that video card. There was something about a 'fixed .exe' to make it work.

So I've never posted on a forum before so excuse me if I'm being a noob and retarted or whatever.
So I have the game and installed it my pc meets all the requirements. The problem is that whenever I go to actually "play" the game like start a map I am directed out of the game back to my desktop and it says
"a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly."
has this happened to anyone? I just want to play the game

TotE and Heroes 5 v1.6 freeze on startup
HOMM 5 freeze on startup, it starts showing the ubi logo and freezes halfway, yet the music still plays. If i skip the video it still freezes and won't load up the main menu. This started happening when I updated to 1.6. I have same problem with TotE. However, HoF version 2.1 works perfectly normal, and HOMM 5 work with patch 1.5. I downloaded the new drivers and i tried disabling some of the background processes, but still nothing happens. Anyone has an idea how to fix this?
EDIT:
nvidia gforce 7600 GS
2gb RAM
AMD Athlon 3800+
and i use windows XP.

sounds like you've tried most everything. Is it a friends disk or something because I tried to run a friends disk that he had already installed and had tons of trouble with it then when i bought my own disk it ran fine.

New discovery of incompatibility.
Now, that I have tried again to fix my monitors' driver problem to a much newer version(start of April-2008)and, succeeded(was called VA902-3 in the Viewsonic driver database folder onto my HD).
And, that the newest Direct SDK (June 2008) is now, installed also. The game does the same video incompatibility flashing, still.
Now, It would seem that updating the Bios of the board is no longer an option(my current one is dating December 30th 2005). The drivers can, no longer, function properly on such an old ROM programming of the chipsets of my mainboard. Seem to be the same problem with the AGP 8x video card.
Upgrading the rom-bios programming usually speeds-up the mainboards' FSB's communication between all hardware components installed onto it. Might even speed up the main processors' ability to process and comprehend the much newer Java based programming of today's applications.
It would seem that HoMM5-Tote's core programming might be too advanced for such an old rom-bios of both the aging video card and the mainboard(that would explain why ATI released the AGP 8x's X1050 newest and, totally compatible chipset for the Vista O.S.'s interface-SP1 included).
If, it gets way too expensive to upgrade to a much stronger machine within this current one, I might consider a cheaper and much newer machine in the closest electronics store of my area of residence of the same city.
I just thought of sharing this experience of mine as of when it comes to decide when it is time to abandon the aging machine and, move on with the much newer tech without shelling thousands of dollars for those quad core powered state-of-the-art and latest chipsets. Besides, the packaging of the game clearly states, in its specs needed and recommended list, that a Dual Core processor is, quite recommended on both AMD and Intel Processors + 2 Gb of free RAM(means that having at least 2.5 to 3 GB of RAM cards is preferable). I wonder why I skipped these recommendations? Probably thought that my video card's processing ability was good enough for Tiny and Small maps. And, was wrong, as of last Winter of this year-2008.
Have not fixed, this problem yet, work too much and I just hit the age of 40 years by June 10th-2008. The aging is really killing the endurance of playing long games, I guess. Lacking the finances for it too, really does not help either.

Don't try to sound 'geekish' it doesn't fit you, are you Patenaudeluc from the ubi forums where you were banned I recall? You have no real knowledge about technical details nor software, just some 'cool words' that sound 'OMG technical' or phrases you have seen here and there, especially marketing ads.
I don't advise anyone to take him seriously if he is indeed the aforementioned banned Ubi account guy

Trying to be geekish?
I'm afraid to be a very large NOT.
I really am, an old geek from the start of the 1980's.
Do not need a sales rep. to help me buy the next best comp.. I get to choose myself the one that I, personnally, judge to be the most satisfactory to my own, prerequisites.
Say, were you, even born, in 1981?
