Definitely graphics card, 512 mb is enough to play if you don't mind a little lag.

Did you try getting a new driver for the Graphic card? That should help the performance...

That usually helps a bit, but even then an integrated graphics card just isn't going to cut it for this game (or any other current 3D game for that matter)

By the way, if your graphics card has shared memory you'll basically also upgrade your RAM when you buy a videocard with separate video memory because then there's more free RAM for the CPU.

Hello.

512 ddr sdram(1 stick/1 open slot).

NVDIA GeForce 6100 Integrated video system.

What difference does what I have make? I just would like to know which improves performance more. I know I'm borderline minimum for running this game, and would just like to speed it up a little. For the least amount of bread, of course. I'm NOT rich. I'd have a $2k PC if I was.

Obviously what you have already makes a difference! If you already had 1GB of RAM or something close to that than I wouldn't give you a reccommendation to get more. The fact that you have integrated graphics makes a HUGE difference....like someone else mentioned, I'm pretty sure that it does share the systems RAM. I would definitely reccommend that you upgrade your graphics.

Hello.

Thanks, all for the replies.

I have already searched for the latest driver and installed it. No noticeable change.

Video Card: Will the card I buy REPLACE or SUPPLEMENT the video system I already have? And how BIG a card should I look at getting MINIMUM? Like I said, I'm NOT rich. The less expensive, the better.

The new vid card will replace your existing graphics. What you buy really depends a lot on how much you are willing to spend. I would go with at least something in the ATI X800 or Nvidia 6800 range. If you shop around you can probly find a X850 for around $150 - $160 or a high end 6800 for even less. Im assuming you have AGP so make sure you don't get a PCI-E version

Thanks Plexus22 for the reply.

I'm sorry to hear they're so expensive. $100 is my budget.

What's AGP?

Edited by Plexus22 at 08:46, 25 May 2006.

AGP = Accelerated Graphics Port. Its the legacy graphics connection that was most common before PCI Express became the norm. Actually you should check your motherboard to make sure it has an AGP slot because sometimes the ones with integrated graphics dont even have seperate graphics port (especially the OEMs like Dell, HP, Compaqu, etc.)Its usually green or brown and looks different than the PCI slots. Its in a different position on the board and theres only one of them (usually). Go here to see what it looks like:

AGP

BTW you would probably be OK with something less expensive than an X800 or 6800 series. Some people that have posted here say they are doing OK with Nvidia 6600 series. Also the ATI 9800 and 9600 PRO series are good too.

Edit: I did a little research and judging from the time that the 6100 integrated graphics hit the market, your motherboard could very possibly have a PCI-E graphics port on it instead of AGP. You should definitely find out which one it has or if it has neither before buying a new card.

Hello.

Thank you Plexus22 for the reply and, more importantly, the explainer. I'm still learning about all this stuff. Any information is a plus. "Knowledge is power".

I found out I do have PCI-Express as a matter of fact. I'm conferring with a professional and will probably get an actual "card" to both improve my video as well as freeing up the RAM that my integrated video system leeches from my system. I've been shown about half a dozen models for $77-100, so I have affordable options.

Next stop: RAM!(in about 6 months or so) Thanks for all the help. Heroes Community is TOTALLY AWESOME DUDE!

Yes there is a "legion" of video cards on the market in the $77 - $100 range but you should make sure that you get something that will be better than your 6100 integrated graphics or else it defeats the whole purpose.

You can definitely find a 6600 or an X800 for less than $100 but remember that not all graphics cards are equal even if they use the same GPU (the graphics chip on the card, ie. 6600, X800, X850, 6800, 9800, etc.). The core clock speed and memory clock speed make a difference.

Some of them have kick a$$ mail in rebates and all of them are good values. Don't know if your looking to buy your card online but IMO thats the way to go if you realy want to get the best bang for your buck

Hello.

Thanks for all the component help, everyone.

In my first post here, I mentioned that about the tenth time I started HV, it initialized(went from desktop to game menu)and loaded the saved game about 1/4 to 1/3 FASTER than it had been the first several times.

Last night, it started working even faster. The total difference now seems to be about a 50% reduction in running speeds/times.

Has anyone else seen any unexplained speed change with this game? I'm just curious.

Need a video card. Here is what I got now...

Intel Celeron 2.8ghz
796mb Ram
Intel onboard graphic w/shared memory
I do have an AGP slot for the new card.

How does this one sound.

ChiefMax ATI Radeon 9550 8x AGP 256mb with dvi and tvout retail box for 50 bucks with free shipping.

Is this a good deal or a good card to run this game? Or is the Geforce card better? A lot of people seem to have the Geforce video card of some type that are playing the game. Any advice would be apprectiated. Thanks.

Zephyr are you going to use the TV out feature? If not I would skip the TV out in exchange for a slightly better card with no TV out.

Thanks for the advice. I don't know if I would use the tv out feature or not. Staples here has a AGP Geforce 5500 fx 128mb on clearance for 22.50 after easy rebate (62.50 before). I am thinking about this one since I can pick it up locally and it is a little more affordable for me right now with the rebate. It has to be better than what I have now.

I was having the same problem that others have had. Game was crashing at the loading screen. I did get to play the game after downloading the file SirDunco gave the link to. I renamed the original file instead of overwriting it though. The graphics look pretty crappy. And I hate the lag. But at least I got to play a while with my crappy onboard Intel graphics. I had to turn off all the goodies. The longer I played the crappy the graphics seem to get. Started loosing all their details and looked more like some of my first 3d models I made.
