That article was from in 2009, when the opposition was highest to the corporatist healthcare bill. The one that used all of the proposals Republicans always touted whenever faced with a Democrat instigating Universal Healthcare.
The Democrats are further right than the Conservative parties in most other countries. The only reason to percieve them as being a leftist party id because no such leftist party exists. If you want to see a real Leftist party, look at Canada. Our Center-right Conservative party just knocked the Centrist Liberal Party to third place since the country was founded. Fort the first time in recorded history as well, our Leftist party (the New Democratic Party) are the official opposition (second stongest party).
... at least the NDP crushed the far-left seperatist Bloc Quebecois down to 4 seats and made their leader of 15 years resign. And the Green Party (fiscal conservative, environmentally liberal, socially centrist) party also got their first seat ever.
But back to your country. Yes.
Look at all of the major policy decisions of the 2 only parties in your country. They run in complete parallel. Did you forget that George W Bush did a massive injection into the education system and medicare just before the 2004 election? And how about Obama, how easily did he give up on his lip service claims of ending the Patriot act, torture and letting the temporary tax breaks expire? (answer, actually pretty quickly)

No, the dem party is not a center right party. If they go any further left they will be communist. The democrat party will essentially be dead after the next Congressional election. They will lose the Presidency and the Senate. Americans simply will not tolerate being ruled by socialists.
Last time I checked the Democrats would the the part the most to the right on in Norwegian politics if they had gotten the chance to run for election.
The republicans would be an inch more to the right on the scale, but considering how far away they are from any parties with represenations and voters, they are more or less fascists parties per definition on Norway 
Of course, there are more rightwing parties than that, but those parties are parties that under no circumstances get votes.
I would just love to see what happened if Red Election Alliance(Rød Valgallianse, the most leftwing party we have that get votes) suddenly ran in the American election. They would be more communist that anything you ever had, and the same applies to even FRP(Progress Party, gets 4-5% votes, if the most rightwing party of mainstream Norwegian elections), which would have been communist snows per definition.
So safe you profehy of doom, for the world is not doomed.

The New York Times and WNBC-TV report that the Manhattan District Attorney's Office plans to release further details about the men later Thursday.
New York City police have been on high alert for threats to the city since the U.S. raid that killed Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden over a week ago.

Liberals tend to be ignorant of the real world and live in lollypop land where a hug will turn a terrorist into a saint. When Obama got into office and became privy to the secret reports about terrorism, ect, it was an eye-opening experience for him. He learned hugs won't really turn a terrorist into a saint. He learned that information from torturing known terrorists has saved thousands of American lives. He knew if he was soft on terrorism and another major terrorist attack happened on US soil he would not have a snowball's chance in hell of being reelected.

because you think they would credible to terrorists by claiming they love them?
not that it would absolutely not work, but coming from some people, it smells way too much like hypocrisy.
