As Cepheus pointed months ago, H3 creature were made with 3D, I don't know about H2 ones. Now, for the map animation, it takes several hours to design and animated a lake in 2D, and days to animate one through 3D.
Although with the new speedtree software, the fauna gets faster inside.

Most of the H3 graphics (aside the UI-stuff) was created in 3D. Including all Creatures and all the objects on Town Screens.

The graphics is the least important thing in a strategy game. Usually the greater the emphasis is on the appearance, the more shallow is the gameplay (except if we're talking about rich and dedicated developers like Creative Assembly for example). Heroes needs a good-looking battle map and town screens for atmosphere's sake and that's it - the rest of the game could be two-coloured for all I care.

Let's not kid ourselves - Heroes of Might and Magic became popular largely due to its very good graphics. They received high praise at the time. H1,H2,H3 were very good games, but they wouldn't get nearly as much popularity if they had average looks.

Therefore, I'm not surprised HOMM players have such high demands regarding graphics, or even that for quite a few people the RPG (not strategy) aspects are more important. HOMM simply attracts such people. I know people who were attracted to the game by visuals, not strategy.

And finally, Ubisoft disagrees with you. They try so hard to make HOMM a game about story and cutscenes. Balance, depth, AI is secondary. New HOMM games don't build upon previous ones, they basically start from scratch. HOMM5, M&M:H6 are not sequels. They are remixes. They are just opportunities to milk the same idea while adding better graphics. If there's M&M:H7, it will have about 5 factions as well. It will just have better animations, models, textures.

Heroes of Might and Magic II
Heroes of Might and Magic III

Heroes of Might and Magic: Nival remix

If the graphics was so important, Disciples would have had twice as many fans as Heroes. While it's not totally irrelevant how the game looks, the gameplay is far more important. This is not a FPS.
As for Ubisoft - I couldn't care less about their "thinking".

That's funny because I think all Disciples games look worse. I don't like the style.

As for Ubisoft, they're thinking they're not going to make a moderately ambitious turn-based strategy game. They're thinking you're going to buy another bland remix like Black Hole remix or no TBS for you.

These 2 sentences in the same post contradict from each other. You say they start from scratch, then you say they milk the same idea over again. And I hate how the hatred for H6 has taken H5 with itself along the way, which was a marvellous game, better than H3. And how is H4 and H6 the same idea with 1,2,3? They are complete revolutions on the Heroes series. H4 failed. H6 seems like it failed for now. But H5? No sir, it was brilliant.

The obsession of H3 blinded people's eyes it seems.

They try to add new things, everyone goes "No don't change the game! Give back our 7 resources and ****". They stay loyal to classic Heroes idea (H5), "oh, this is the same game we played, just better graphics". Decide already.

If you don't like H5 then you MUST like H3, amirite?

And H5 wasn't better than H3. For one, the art style sucked [/personalopinion]

It's all subjective.
The amount of dimensions used shouldn't even matter.

Which is wrong because the only major similarity between Heroes III and Heroes V is the 7-tier system with one upgrade per creature (which was seriously modified with TotE). The spell system has more in common with the Heroes II and Heroes IV systems than with the Heroes III one, the initiative system is completely new, the racial abilities appear for the first time in the series and the one-type-of-hero-per-faction is again Heroes I-II thing as Heroes III changed the situation completely in this regard. So the game was definitely not a Heroes III clone. At all. And yeah, it was also much uglier.

Where features are concerned, H5 wasn't all that different from H3 - it just evolved on a few matters. And devolved in others.. But gameplay-wise, it felt nothing like H3 and I have trouble understanding those who say otherwise.

So for people who trash H:V and H:VI:
H:V has evolved H:III features - and its not good.
H:VI has completely new features - and its not got good.

So what's left? H:III clone would be good? No, I don't think so...
Same people that have problem with H:V and H:VI and are so tireless in praising H:III would argue that they play same game and want new stuff. But what exactly do they want they don't know, just new awesome stuff.

For some new features are not radical enough, for some they are too radical. Some people like 3D graphic, some don't. Some people like alternate upgrades, some say that we don't need upgrades at all. There is no way developers can make game that will please all the fans.

I think that getting rid all the bugs and adding sim turns, map editor, ladder would please all the fans, I dunno, what do you think?

Replacing the recycled models of some of the neutral creatures would also be nice.

Was heroes 5 a success or not? I think it was, because they are making heroes 6.
They copied most of thing from heroes 3, and most of things they improved (and not changed). I really like how they approached the making of it. The only problem with me was the cartoony art style. And no more hexagonal grid.
We will see if heroes 6 will be the same success with drasticly changes, but at moment i think it won't be.

I don't think so. As I said some fans just can't take changes made in H:VI (4 resources or creature pool or some other change) and no matter how polished game is they will never be satisfied because "core" of the game is broken in their opinion.
