conquest of four lakes has always had a special place in my heart too.
i have played them all and enjoy most except:
borings mountain
dog days
crimson clover
and magic forest

map stuff
big closed maps
showdown and super heroes are great maps
open maps
close combat (access to gold mine in sw corner needs fixed)and the struggle (green needs another gold mine or one taken from orange) are current favorites
different maps
I really like jaws (but the file is bad after I load it everytime and I have to reexplode zipped file)

If you want a map that is both open and closed and has TONS of strategy and planning involved.... SHallow be thy game is da map to play. In my opinion is is the best map posted on TOH so far. The map is so well thought out and designed it is so nice to have a different concept of map. 2 THumbs up to Shallow be thy game.

I've only played Shallow SP 2v2 with the computer, what is it like 1v1? I'd be interested to play it sometime, it certainly looked like a map with a LOT of potential, very professional...

Just a mapping question, I saw someone round here (i think) mention that they had bombs on their map to give crystal mine if life, gem if order etc. to balance things. I know one way of doing this (have a forest with mines, kill appropriate trees with conditionals) but that's pretty messy and results in a large difference in placement of mines (and creates problems with the mine's guardian). Is there a more elegant way to do this?
Also Laelth, did you see I reviewed "Dunwold"? Nice map I noticed an error in the victory conditions which you might want to fix, nowhere does it say you need to capture Dunwold to win, it confused me for a bit

I just read the review, and thanks. I appreciate the kind words. You're right about the victory condition; it is confusing. I'm trying to think of an elegant way to fix it. Perhaps you can help.
The problem is that there's a two condition victory requirement. You must capture Castle Dunwold and be the only player to own towns in order to win. I suppose I could just say that, huh?
As for the balance issue you mentioned in the review, you're right. Purple starts with the disadvantage of being between teal and blue. I tried to compensate purple by giving them the fastest access to the walls of the city of Dunwold (blue and teal have to travel nearly twice as far). In addition, the purple territory is invulnerable to bandits (until the peasants guarding their bridge are eliminated), whereas bandits can sneak into both the teal and blue areas. I don't think, honestly, that these 2 things are enough to balance the map perfectly, but I tried to throw purple some kind of bone anyway.
My biggest disappointment playing the map is that in multi mode players tend to ignore the city altogether. In fact, in every multi game I've played so far, the players have either focused on taking out the purple town (neutral in the 2 player version) or on claiming the mines around the city, rather than trying to capture the city itself. By the time someone actually assaults Dunwold, the game is usually over. Oh well. Live, learn, and make another map.
Thanks again for your time, energy, and suggestions.

Unknow lands second place? Haave you visited Camelnors site? he said on that site he take looks from one russian site wich is his favourite map resurse you can find ratings on that site and Unknow Lands has not very good rating 7 and something like that best rating is 10 and like i Camelnor said in other topic he dont like like adventure objects placed on map and i agreed too it is in chaotic condition also guard in the middle just lvl 3 without any strenght lol you can look in editor for example only 10 ice demons and little more on advanced difficulty. And i agree borings mountains , dog days, crimson clover and magic forest not enjoyable and in my opinion they are not good for multiplayer in condition like they are for now

Oh, Psychobabble, BTW ...
You haven't reviewed it yet, but it's on Celestial Heavens. Try "Dark Son." While it's, perhaps, not appropriate for ToH, it's still my best map, I think, and it's a ton of fun.
Of all my maps, that's the one that has the best chance of actually competing in your contest. Thanks again.

heh, im not sure i really understood that... but it seems like you said i had ratings of maps on my site? I do tell my opinion of them, but I have yet to give ratings (of scale 1-10) on them. Maybe you are getting the ranking system mixed up with one of the other site's. But you are right, I do think the russian site is the best source for maps simply because they have the most. Of course, when you have that many, you will have to weed through some bad ones, but it is worth the time.

I just played 1/2 a game on "Plains of Despair" and I was wondering why everyone likes it so much? It has the equal highest average rating (3.3) and it didn't seem anything special to me, in fact I ended the game (and went to bed) because (playing red) I followed a passage at the far right of the map across the bridge, thinking it was going to lead to the enemy. But it was a freaking dead end, leading to a magic box and a treasure chest... and it took me over a week to walk the length of the pathway!!! wtf??? It was seriously frustrating...

Heh, Actually I'd like to point out that Shallow Be Thy Game has surpassed it in rating (Shallow is ranked 3.4 with popularity of 1.9) but yes, I agree. Unfortunately, i think people like that map only because of it's cool looking mini-map, not actually how good it is. Oh well

Camelnor, it isn't good then why is it rated so highly by players?
Is there a problem with the map rating script at TOH...any possibility that the ratings can been diddled?
I've noticed that some maps that have been played relatively few times are rated as more popular than maps played twice the number of times...wth...thought the popularity rating was determined by the number of times the map is played.

map ratings are updated about once a week
But they are accurate; ratings are based on ip addresses, so in some cases players could rate a specific map a few extra times if they have a few ips. But it wouldnt make that much significance when there are 30 or more ratings minimum for the maps.
By the way, later on I will be making the map rating to calculate in % instead of x/4.
People posting on message board do not reflect a group of players from another country or region that enjoy a specific map, remember. We got only a dozen or so players vocalizing here, but we got 100s actually playing.
