Dwarves were cooler than people gave them credit for. Warmachinist build? Very viable and cooler than other factions. Destructive? While lacking extreme spellpower they had a lot of fire combos to make it work, plus empathy. Might + light? Yes please. They could go both offensive and defensive with low or heavy magic emphasis, you could simply do whatever you liked with them. Now add the great amount of combos between spells, runes and unit abilities and you have one of the most complex factions.
Its only problem was the exaggerrated racial theme and a good number of cheesy tactics. Love them or hate them, truth is they had many ways to annoy an opponent

seems very logical that at a very fundamental level, a race that lives in an arctic environment would worship the one thing they lack - a source of heat - provided for the dragon of fire.
therefore i see no issue with the dwarves living in snow but utilizing fire in their combat and i guess everyday life.

Worse. Having activated rune of berserking for double the battlerage attacks.
That is especially annoying if used by a blackbear to knock back all the units you can hit Then there's the constant stun, stun, paw strike, stun strategy. Armageddon with last stand and resurrection rune when you are at 1hp. Two flamelords for 2 guaranteed marks of fire, then ignited armageddon/fireball for double the crispy fun. Dwarven resistance + boots/armor of forgotten hero for resist, resist, resist. Rune of incorporeal, miss, miss, miss. Rune of charge with whitebears that attack 3 adjacent units scaring all three. Have you ever seen 1 whitebear scare 80 warmongers 2 times in a row? They can scare small units more than half the time.
The list goes on

Being part of the hating majority, I had two main problems with the dwarves - their uninspired, hopelessly generic design, repeated several times among other things and the totally unbalanced raw power of the faction, overshadowed in its unpleasantness only by Sylvan and somewhat equal to Stronghold's. The kiddies' attitude that the more overpowered it is - the cooler it is, is not among the things I respect very much, so naturally Heroes V Fortress inhabits the bottom of my list of decently-made factions.

Elvin states exactly why I HATE facing the Fortress, and I doesn't even play against intelligent human players. Those stupid AI's is dangerous enough with the Dwarfs. :/
And yeah I agree with Zenofex on nearly EVERY account...

Well the imbalance is usually a lategame thing, might factions were all too good by that time. Midgame dwarves were fine, partly because of the extreme resource costs and slower creeping. I avoided playing them in multi, not because I could not play them well but because their slow creeping annoyed me. And by slow I mostly mean how many minutes every fight took Final battles were awesome though.

All that and imagine if your hero is King Tolghar with his King of the Stone Halls ability giving a permanent Rune of Thunderclap effect on your units.
I had this mod that unlocks campaign heroes for custom maps. The rule was not to choose a starting hero but have one at random. Because simply noone can beat Tolghar with an equal army.
Hmm, save perhaps for Raelag as Master of Initiative...

Well, since every faction now has some kind of avatar to represent their "god" (glory for Haven, fate S/W for Necropolis, water Spirits for Sanctuary, and for Inferno... well, I guess all creatures wich are born as demons (that means everyone except succubus and some heroes)), since they all are spawned by Urgash), it is probable that if heroes 6 has a Dwarf faction, it will have a non dragon fire creature
And yes, in heroes 6 I hope dwarves won't be as overpowered as they were in H5 (yesteray I played a bit of HoF and realised how runes can make the game unbalanced).

Love the creature. There should be at least one fire creature for each tier, since with Inferno looking more carnal and fleshly, with less "fiery" creatures, there's no excuse to not see a Dwarf faction with fire creatures.

And aside from Champion tier, in which the unit should be fire, they could have 1 ice and 1 earth, since they live in a cold climate and dwarves usually are bond to earth.

3 fire + 1 ice and 1 earth?
Keep it going and will end up with a "DWARFLUX"
Try not to overcombine the inspirations or it will end up as an mutated hibred.

The Magma Toad is epic!
However, if we interpret the Fate Spinner as the incarnation of Asha, we could also keep the Magma Dragon ... unless we have to see something like this, which I think will make me scream.

But dragons should be bosses, not champions (Unless the Magma Dragon was a lizard before it became a Dragon ).
But between the Dragon and the fire glory, I believe everyone picks the dragon

Ok, seeing how many love the idea of Lava Toads, I'll explain my idea behind them.
First they are not exactly creatures of Arkath. That's still for the Dragons. Lava Toads are creatures that live in and around pools of Lava, that are so frequent in Dwarf lands. As such they are highly resistant to heat and very vulnerable to cold. They eat something that is in the Lava as they ingest great ammounts and gives them their bloated appearance. The Lava they ingest they can also spit and puke. The Dwarves of the Stronghammer and Winterwind clans have learned to tame these beasts and train them to spit lava at anything that isn't a Dwarf.(I intended the trolls in my lineup to be an occasional victim of this as well)

I'd personally would like to see more steampunkish version of the dwarwen faction where magic is mixed with steam and black powder technology. Flintlock guns, steam powered armor etc.

Actually i'meant 1 fire, 1 ice and 1 earth to core and elite ranks, and a fire unit for champion,
let me explain better:
CORE
Shield guy (dwarf - earth)
Colored Polar Bear (animal - ice)
Lava Frog (magic creature - fire)
ELITE
Stone Giant (stone humanoid - earth)
Snow Wyrm (magic creature - ice)
Rune priest dude (dwarf - fire)
CHAMPION
Magma dragon (dragon - fire)
I was talking about the creature being realated to the element (the bear is a creature who lives in ice), not about sparkling shiny and colorful monsters using elemental powers. aside from the fire creatures, the others would use 'normal' strikes.
but the DWARFDWARGDAWERFDRAGONCONFLUXOFMIGHTANDMAGIC idea is really cool =P
-------
about the steampunk: i sometimes like the style, but i wouldn't want it on Heroes fanchise, that gunpowerder hand canon of the gremlins is already too steampunky for my taste.

Ice or Fire let’s say a bit of both STEAM; with the main emphasis on fire.
So first of all I burrowed some bits from people on the forum from they’re vision of a dwarven faction when I created my one which is:
Core
1. Defender - Shieldguard
2. Gunner - Sharpshooter
3. Giant Wolf – Fenrir
Elite
4. War Bear - Spirit Bear
5. Rune Priest - Rune Keeper
6. Shield Maiden - Valkyrie
Champion
7. Steam Giant - Colossus
Heroes would be Clan Leader and Rune Mage
Description
1. No explanation necessary.
2. While working the mines the dwarven engineers found minerals that combined could create different colors, ore building materials but one could explode and is now as the black powder …. Although at first was used for controlled detonation when working on the tunnels for the Kingdome expansion, it`s engineered into a weapon that shoots lead projectiles when igniting the black powder.
3. Giant wolf believed to have been mutated by the Dragon veins they have been tamed and used by some clans found on the surface, but soon found a great use in the army on a regular basis.
Fenrir is a title given to the most fearsome of the giant wolves who have taken part in numerous battles and survived, they are given body armor when going in battle
4. War Bear – Among the dwarves it’s believed that bears are a creation of Arkath himself, and this belief is reinforced by love of bear to borrow them self in the ground/cave, the ease with which they accept dwarves `and befriended them and the existence of Spirit Bears.
Spirit Bear are bears who fought alongside dwarfs on the battlefield and are returned to life from the realm of Arkath to fight once more for his allies the dwarfs (NWN 2 Okku .
5. Rune pries no explanation needed.
6. Shield Maiden is the creation of Arkath who gave the breath of lief to statues molded by the might good. They are the messengers between Arkath and his children the dwarves, and reside in the realm of the good. Valkyrie is a title given to Shield Maidens who have proved they’re valor in Arkath eyes and are given a winged horse to swiftness their mission, to aide the dwarfs in their wars and bring the heroic souls of those who died on the battlefield to Arkath side.
7. Steam Giant – Contraptions created by dwarven engineers used for mining but during a raid from underground new comers called Dark elves they proved to hold they’re own and found it use in the military . Colossus have the core powered with sacred flame from Arkath himself those eliminating the need to store steam like the Steam Giant, and only require water which is accessible in form of underground rivers and outside from melting snow also they are especially designed for war with though armor and devastating weapons that can take down the mightiest of walls.
P.S. The art I used is taken from Deviant Art and copyrights go to their respective owner while other I have taken from the Warhammer Age of Reckoning Art Book and the amassing artwork is credited to them. I tried to find art concept as close as possible to my vision of what I wanted didn't quite found them but I guess they work to
