ELITE:
* Drunk Dwarf playing with Matches - Incinerator (shooter: puts fire in paper planes and trow them!)

If there were two classe of heroes per faction and each class had a racial skill, i got an ideia...
The RuneMage, the Magic hero would have his runes.
The ClanLord/MountainLord/WarLord, the might class, should have abylities that enchance the capabilities of his unities when fighting in favored terrain. The dwaves goes to war mostly to defend them selves, isn't it?
So, in Snow they sould have some bonus, in lava another, and in the under ground another. At this very moment I can't think about any great bonus, but I'll think about something.

Quote: Ok, seeing how many love the idea of Lava Toads, I'll explain my idea behind them.
First they are not exactly creatures of Arkath. That's still for the Dragons. Lava Toads are creatures that live in and around pools of Lava, that are so frequent in Dwarf lands. As such they are highly resistant to heat and very vulnerable to cold. They eat something that is in the Lava as they ingest great ammounts and gives them their bloated appearance. The Lava they ingest they can also spit and puke. The Dwarves of the Stronghammer and Winterwind clans have learned to tame these beasts and train them to spit lava at anything that isn't a Dwarf.(I intended the trolls in my lineup to be an occasional victim of this as well)
I like it even more now

I know this isn't going to gel well with a lot of people, but this is my version of Fortress as it should have been:
Core
Propper > Miner
* Not old enough to even swing a pickaxe, these youngsters nevertheless form a valuable part of dwarven society in fetching and carrying props from depots to tunnel-heads.
* The absolute basis of dwarven society, miners are in constant need to re-hew tunnels, that without such attention would eventually close up, no matter how much magic was cast to prevent it.
Kob > Kobold
* No-one is sure exactly what Kobs are - turned demons, the souls of dead miners, and fearies have all been suggested - but regardless, no mine would seek to operate without one, for they sing out at the slightest trace of mine-damp or instability, often preventing minor problems becoming major disasters.
* Where mere tunnels became great halls, the Kobs of those tunnels became Kobolds, no less akin to their homes, but far more powerful and protective, striking out at anyone who tries to endanger the halls and those who dwell within.
Bolter > Dampbolter
* The most basic real troops of the dwarven armies, they are little more than normal dwarves armed with cheap but powerful crossbows.
* Of course, enemy soldiers are not the only issues facing dwarven mines, firedamp from coal-mining is also a constant danger and so crossbows - or 'bolters' as they're also known - are drawn out to deal with this danger as well, and do so by wrapping oil-soaked rags around the bolts and setting them alight before they fire.
Elite
Fyrd > Huskarl
* No army can rely on a single weapon of course, and while Bolters do a decent amount of damage to whoever they hit, they are unwieldy weapons in a melee. As such, Fyrds are recruited from miners in rotation, where they are equipped with armour and battleaxes, and become integral parts of the dwarven armies.
* Sometimes, a Fyrd does not wish to return to mining when his time in the army is up, seeking instead to continue his service as a professional soldier. Disdained by some as being 'undwarfish', these long-term soldiers are nevertheless respected, for their years of experience give them an edge that no mere Fyrd could hope to meet.
Cave Bear > War Bear
* First encountered when a group of miners happened upon an inhabited den, the owner of which killed several of the intruders, Cave Bears are now bred by some dwarven mines as living weapons, for there is little that can stand against the immense beasts.
* Of course, while the Cave Bear's hide is tough as leather, it is nevertheless vulnerable to edged weapons, and so those mines that truly value their bears armour them as they would any soldier.
Runekeeper > Runecarver
* Runekeepers are scholars who tend to the archives of information that have accrued over the centuries. Many of the records have to do with mineral deposits, historic events and other such mundane issues, but some of the records have to do with more magical subjects.
* Where Runekeepers merely keep the records of the dwarven domains, Runecarvers are responsible for the creation of the records, both the mundane and the magical, for which they need a much greater understanding of the events and issues to hand.
Champion
Giant > Colossus
* Not originally denizens of the underground realms, Giants nevertheless began to move there after being driven out of their more traditional homes. At first there was a lot of tension between these new immigrants and the dwarves, but eventually they learned to co-exist, and even formed an alliance, in exchange for their service as soldiers, the Giants' children would be constantly cared for.
* While a giant is a very powerful combatant, his size makes him a very big target and so some giants choose to wear armour, which makes them even more formidable, both physically and psychologically.

Very nice line-up MattII
There are a little to much dwarfs for my taste, but I guess that was no surprise . But for being a "dwarf filled" faction it is really good.
However while I think the giant is a very good and fitting champion I think another name instead of the Colossus would be good. (it might be confused to the H5 Academy Colossus.)
But yeah a cool line-up, but make sure the Propper and the Fyrd are different enough.

To all those people who keep complaining about the Dwarfs - please stop snowing and try to be constructive and creative or don't comment at all. Saying how much you hate Dwarfs doesn't help this discussion at all.
I would, once again, like to express my wish to eventually have all 10 Ashan factions in a single Heroes game. Hopefully, H6 will grant me that.
On topic, Dwarfs have great game-play potential, having the unique rune system. There is great potential for units as well (D2 Mountain Clans anyone?). I know all agreed on Defender, but I'd rather see a rune-warrior type dual-wielding melee unit instead. Everything else I agree on.
Just a thought though, what do you guys think of some sort of benevolent Efreet (before you flame me, I know they are demonic spirits, that's why I sad "sort of" and "benevolent") as an Arkath-themed fire-based glory/maiden counterpart?

Actually I was planning to split the Academy in 2, with the snow terrain 'Factory' getting the Golem and Titan (upgrades to Juggernaut), while the desert terrain Conflux getting the Genie and Rakshasa.
Quote: But yeah a cool line-up, but make sure the Propper and the Fyrd are different enough.
Well the Propper just has a club (actually a prop), while the Fyrd has a short-axe/Tomahawk.
Oh, and these guys live entirely underground.

I wanted to see how many different factions I could create by using both "original" and legendary HoMM creatures, excluding Ashan lore.
Thus far I'm up to 20.

Do some of those factions overlap (I had 2 different factions once that included Dryads and Dendroids)?

Oh sure, except that you seem to have forgotten that both Haven and Necropolis are pretty-much all-race factions.

Quote: Do some of those factions overlap (I had 2 different factions once that included Dryads and Dendroids)
I have a bunch of creatures that are similar in concept (dragons, birds, spirits, etc) but I haven't had to reuse any of the creatures, even though some of the factions and lineups are similar to another.
All faction have a lineup of seven creatures, pluss upgrades.
It's a work in progress (this is what I do when I get bored at work)
Asiatic faction
Atlantean/Galapagos faction
Barbarian faction
"Beast" faction
Dark elf faction
Elemental faction
Elf faction
Forge faction
Hedonistic/Nihilistic faction
Highlander faction
Human/Knight faction
Infernal faction
"Middle-eastern" faction
Nature faction
Necromantic faction
Norse faction
"Permafrost" faction
Undead faction
Warlock faction
Wizard faction

Well my list so far is:
Dwarf faction
Construct faction
Desert Wizard faction
Egyptian Necropolis faction
Vampire faction
Far Eastern faction
Forest faction
Dark Forest faction
Cthulhic faction
Cultist faction
Halfling Merchant/Mercenary faction
Naga faction
Lizardman Deep Jungle faction
Lizardman Tropical Island faction
Medusa/Minotaur Underground faction
Gnoll faction
Voodoo Jungle faction
Probably not all of them are ever going to get written up, but some of them are pretty far advanced (like the Dwarves, Constructs and Far Eastern).

I like the idea of a construc-based faction (Forge), but would keep it separate from the Dwarves. I don't think Rune Magic + Engeniering is a perfect fit. I myself would rather stay with the Rune Magic / Norse-viking theme for the Dwarves.

My forge faction would be Nazi/British empire-influenced time travellers from an alternative dimension, complete with steampunk and cybernetic machinery interchangeably
Not exactly lore friendly...
How about gnomes?
Gnomes could work as allies to the dwarves. I don't believe they've been included in any of the previous Heroes games. They could deal with alchemy and stuff.

And you forgot their gremlins.
But don't even try to convince them. As long as it doesn't have a steam minigun they won't by satisfied
And why do all Humanoid units in the fortress have to by mythological? what is wrong whit an animated Runic armor

A forge for H6 would be funny and interesting, although I didn't like the H3 one. Not that I didn't like the concept, but creatures were most of the time just old creatures with some changes...
And if we get a futuristic town, I would like to see aliens, robots and werewolves
And just to understand better Ashan - what is the Seventh Dragon?
