Can you believe that? Curse you Ubi

Ubi will require you to stay logged in for future titles. Single gaming will be impossible, you'll have to login to your account if you wish to play. And if you have net issues? Tough luck, the game will pause and you'll have to wait till it's up again - or quit to main menu. Why should we be forced to stay online for a SINGLE PLAYER game that we bought? That is a good reason to boycott Ubi, their service practically offers nothing while greatly limiting our gaming.
Assassin's Creed 2 for pc that was recently released comes with that travesty of 'online service' and not only does a disconnect send you to main menu - losing current progress until last checkpoint - but there have already been server problems preventing legitimate customers from firing it up. Can you imagine this also happening for H6?

It certainly did not prevent piracy, in fact searching the net I found numerous fans claiming they would pirate the game instead of buying it. Many more canceled their preorders in all new Ubi titles. And best of all? DRM was cracked on the day of its release. It is evident that it alienates customers than hurt piracy, this is hurting pc gaming and has to stop.

Ubisoft DRM Q&A

Ethan Woods's petition against Ubi's DRM has gathered 11k signatures and it grows daily

- Kalah's article on Celestial Heavens.

- Rock Paper and Shotgun's article.

- The Escapist.

- Develop's article on combating piracy. Has some convincing arguments on why DRM is the wrong approach.

- Ubisoft's interview.

It should be noted that they expected "DRM's fate to be eventually hacked, explaining that internally, they've already talked of a timescale for how long their games will be protected by it. But, they believe that it's secure enough for them.
As fate would have it the DRM was cracked on the very same day.

Then there's this...

Quote:
PCG: What I think a lot of us would really like is a firm commitment that you understand our worries that the servers are going to go down and suddenly we've just got some trash data on our hard drives that we've paid for.

Ubisoft: The system is made by guys who love PC games. They play PC games, they are your friends.

PCG: So you can commit to saying that those systems will be patched out?

Ubisoft: That's the plan.

PCG: It's the plan, or it's definitely going to happen?

Ubisoft: That's written into the goal of the overall plan of the thing. But we don't plan on shutting down the servers, we really don't."

Seriously? Could have fooled me, I could swear you were dodging the question

- After Assassin's Creed 2 was released Ubi's servers went down which caused the players unable to login and play the game they paid for.

In ten years' time they'll require you to allow them to sodomize your wife in order to play.
No wife? The game will pause until you get one.

I looked through the different parts and their arguments seems as poor as saying internet is better than jumping, i.e. not comparible without more information.

So I think it is probably correct that the idea behind this is related to copy rights.

It reminds me back in the days when you to the older consoles such as the nintendo often would get a series of demo games with, that was preinstalled on the nintendo. However it was apparantly cheaper for the producer to manufacture a console with entire games installed and then a timer programmed into it. I remember some older friends playing around with it, removing the timer and voila a whole bunch of free games. After all they had sold me the Nintendo like that, and it must be my right to do with it as I want, pee on it, use it as a back scratcher or tear it apart and reassemble it.

I wonder if something similar will be made to ubisofts newer games, like cracks for no cd-play and cd code generator for unlimited installations, etc.

I at least do find it probable, as they mention themself:
Quote:
stop working?
If any service is stopped, we will create a patch for the game so that the core game play will not be affected.

Which probably means they have already made the game in such a way that it is not too hard for themselves to create such a patch.

you forgot to consider that it takes them a full year to create a patch.

The Might and Magic games were specifically created with the intention of operating on as many computers as humanly possible.  If this always-on-broadband joke applies to Heroes VI I'm outta here.

Requiring an online connection to play a single player game is unacceptable. There will be server downtimes, server overloads, loss of data. I'm sure there will be a limit to the number of saved games you are allowed to have for a game on their server.

If this is indeed to be thier policy there needs to be a concerted effort on the part of all HOMM forums and other forums related to Ubi games to produce a petition that will express the fans' displeasure.

It has its ups and downs, though it does have the feeling of making things complicated in hopes of making them more simple. I'm not going to soil myself over it.

Is this so much different from what we have now?

No, but five years ago, when I hadn't even dial-up, I didn't need to spend time worrying whether the single-player TBS I'd just bought would turn out to be a game or a drinks coaster.

This online problem just got a whole lot worse oO. Alright folks we will start a petition. Realistically speaking I doubt that Heroes-fora have anywhere near enough active members to even make Ubi consider taking it off for a second. But what we don't make up with numbers I believe we make up for with "respect". Not neccesarily in the sense that Ubi would really care for our opinion but Heroes-fora obviously represent the community, HC being it's radiant champion. So let's get this started but if we do this we'll have to do it right, no halfassed attempts.
