Yes I understand it is possible to create such an environment and I agree the data can just as well be stored on the computer, why not?

What I would like to know is the "how to do it yourself" way of creating such an environment. Like I once saw some people somehow coupling a nintendo to a light projector and projecting the image on a cinema screen.

I realise you're right, we are off topic, maybe it'd be a good topic to create though, hints on how to simulate different console environment and maybe stuff like that?

How to create such an environment step-by-step:

1) Buy an USB joystick. Plug it in an USB port on the computer.
2) Depending on TV you may need to buy the specific cable you need, and the video card which supports it, otherwise you'll need an adapter. Some cards come with HDMI out so if you have that, just buy the cable and connect to the TV.

3) Turn your computer on
4) Turn your TV on
5) Run the emulator
6) Select the game
7) Get into the sofa
8) Press play
9) Shoot some zombies

Additional step: if cables don't fit (length), you'll have to move your PC accordingly.

Thanks! I'll try it. It was also something like that I had in mind.

How about simulating the environment of a gameboy though?

Or a cinema for movies? That'd be awesome.

Not sure -- never had a gameboy. Only a NES and ZX Spectrum, all the oldies I had... yeah kinda poor, and the spectrum was a gift.

This one is quite hard -- you'll need to find a lot of annoying loud people. No experience in finding that, though, so I can't advise you

In the meantime I sent a wave of mails briefly explaining the situation and giving a link to ubi's official announcement and the facebook group. I don't know how many of these mails are valid anymore but hopefully enough for the message to be forwarded quickly.

Probably too late, but here you go:

Quote:
Ubisoft recently announced that they have created a new internet services platform, that will most likely be used on most, if not all, Ubisoft’s future releases. This platform requires a constant internet verification, even for single player modes. This means that if your internet connection fails, or one of their servers does, the game will be stopped until the connection is reestablished.
This is totally unacceptable for many reasons: for example it will render the game unplayable if you don't have an internet connection, and it will make it very difficult to play it on portable computers. There will be a lot of breaks and halts in the game (Ubi servers are infamous for their lag) and that will make it difficult for most people that buy it to play—but it won't affect the players with a pirated copy.
It will even make it possible Ubi to monitor you while you play!

Short version: Most Ubisoft games will require you to be connected to their servers at all times, even when playing single player.

Changes are marked. Might have went a little overboard; brushed up the sentence structure a bit as well.

Quote:
Wow -- does the gaming industry seriously not realize that they are killing off their own sales by implementing weird requirements ? We've had the DRM discussions, the copy protection discussions, the root kit discussions and now UBISOFT ups it another notch by making a requirement that is just ridiculous.

My former colleagues at PC Gamer found out that while testing review copies of the PC port of Assassin's Creed 2 they got kicked out of playing the game whenever they lost their internet connection. Which simply means your game quits and you lose any progress --  with single player missions.

We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected.

The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers'. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen - all my progress since it last autosaved was lost.

Why do software houses consistently find methods to seriously agitate end-users ? I'm sure this again is a privacy breach on so many levels ... UbiSoft .. seriously, I do not want you guys hogging my Internet bandwith. or what if I want to play the game I bought on a laptop with no WiFi available ?

lol... not even the reviewers will be happy with the brand new system

My love for the Heroes games died a bit with Heroes V, with this new Ubisoft idea it has died for every future version. I'm glad Heroes 3 and 4 still are such good games I don't need Ubisoft to recreate the masterpieces of 3DO.

And one more thing. Stardock is making a grand fantasy turnbased fantasy game called Elemental; War of Magic. Much more promising then an Ubisoft Heroes 6 if you ask me.

Yep, and you don't even need the cd to be allowed to play the games from Stardock. Love that company, and all the energy they have proven to lay down on the AI as well.

And it was Elemental; War of Magic.... not World of Magic, as I wrote........

I had read a description of the battle system on the Elemental site that made it sound like an rts.  The latest information makes the battle system sound turn-based so I'm unsure what the reality is.

We don't know anything about heroes 6 gameplay or even if it will have this internet required problem so there is little basis for comparison.  Isn't it being designed by a different company?
