Davaian held up his hands as the crew started to cheer saying, "Now hold up! I don't plan to stay captain. As soon as we are out of this mess, we'll take a real vote on who gets the captainship of this boat. WILHELM! GET US OUT OF HERE!"

Do we continue into the Maelstrom or do we travel for more lucrative waters, whith plenty of well-known sea routes and lots of bounties and prizes?

- I'd say we head back to that chain of isles that we made a stop before encountering the Pride. But it's for Davaian to decide.- Zayl started smoking his pipe.- Also, Eduardo, prepare the casks we wanted to fire at the Pride. Just in case.

Simon had come out of his cabin to "Let out" Aralon (Not going to scar the child that early...) and heard people making plans to go. "I'll be back soon, dear. Just have to yell at Davian a bit!"
An assortment of curses, threats and insults came out of the cabin.
"Love you too!" He ran over to Davian when Lianna started throwing things. "Davian, I'd suggest some shore-leave and then that you read my damn journal!!! You'll find something worthy of a pirate quest in there, I'm sure..." With that, Simon sprinted back to the cabin and closed the door behind him.

Within the week, the Revenant arrived at the chain of islands where they had first found Arlon and been chased by the Fortrind Man-O-War. Davaian called for a meeting of all the officers and the other crewmembers of interest. Simon, Eduardo, Geralt, Kalthak, Alaric, Shreaveport, Wilhelm, Hervin, and Lianna were present at the meeting in what was Arcturus's briefing room. Mat was also there, but providing drinks primarily.
As everyone settled down Davaian said, "I am exactly sure how I feel about this situation. For the first time in years I have no idea where to go. I've only ever done whatever Arcturus told me, but now that he's gone, we have no heading and no purpose. As of now, the best option is to just restock and resupply in the nearest port. However, we also have another situation. I am done with this interim captaincy, and honestly, I want to take my portion of the money, be dropped off at the port, and settle down. That's all I'm asking for. So we must elect a new captain, find a navigator, and fill the positions that are going to be lost. So far it seems like there are two major players that the crew wants as captain, and that would be Gun Chief Eduardo and Crew member Simon. If Simon becomes the captain, no one will exactly have to take his former position of whatever it is he is doing and will probably continue doing even if he becomes the captain. If Eduardo becomes the captain, someone will have to take his place as Gun Chief. Shreaveport is highly skilled and would likely make a good Gun Chief. Any thoughts, questions, comments, or something?"

"I will Not become capitan of this ship. Capitan of a cavalry platoon, yes. But never of a ship. I am a Cavalier and I will die a Cavalier. As good as this job is, I will drop it for the first cavalry position I come across. Many of you know this. And I will bare many a task on this ship. But as soon as I can get my boots back in the stirrups I bid you all farewell."
Eduardo looked at each man assembled at the meeting individually to make sure his words had sunk in.
"So as much as some of you would see me lead the way, my way will eventually lead to a stable. And what kind of capitan would I be, if I left my crew at port and rode off into the distance?"

For a second, Simon just had a blank look on his face. "You want me to what?!" He actually seemed to be a little mad and hurt. "I'm not a leader of men! I'm just a performer, a comedian-"
"And you lead a successful and relatively bloodless mutiny against the old captain, 'dad'." Alaric interrupted when Simon took the time to breath.
"Just a lucky happenstance! I probably couldn't do it-" The bard began to object.
Lianna held his hand and whispered, "Yes you could. You always stack the deck, dear. Sure you're impulsive, but you never do anything that wouldn't work or hurt another."
"No! I'm just lucky. Besides, the man wouldn't follow a bard with, what? Seven years ship experience!"
Both of them sat back and thought about that for a while. "You know," Alaric began.
"They did follow and trust you before," Lianna helped him.
"And they probably would do it again." Alaric finished.
Lianna gave him a rather generous hug. "Besides, everyone loves the bard."
Simon, looking rather miserable and sorry for himself, complained, "This is a mutiny among my family! At least wait until I'm the captain..."
"So you accept?" Alaric asked.
For a second the room was silent as everyone stared at the bard. Lianna sat down and Simon shifted uncomfortably. He seemed to be weighing his options and trying to find a way out. "Damn you all, fine. But only until someone better for the job comes along and only if our current second-in-command here stays on to advise me." He glared at Davian and, giving his best impression of Arcturus, Simon yelled out, "Because I still need a good right boot to keep the men from knowing which way is up! Did anyone ever understand what he meant by that, by the way?"

Davaian raised his eyebrows and said, "I don't think anyone did, but at any rate, I'll stay on and help you learn the ropes until such time as we reach the nearest port. Until then I'll stay as your second...given that no one else challenges you for the position of captain."
Mat raised his hand and then said, "Can I be captain?"

"Sure Matt, you can become capitan." Eduardo said with a wide grin.
"But you'll have to fight Simon for it and you'll have to be hazed by the rest of the crew. And you'll have to prove your claim to the right of captaincy to the rest of us officers. And if you survive all of that, the capitan has to lead the crew in battle. So unlike now, you cannot hide during every encounter in the galley. You'll have to be the first to jump over the rail and plunge your sword into the enemy. Then you'll have to wade through the enemy defenders and duell the other capitan while the crews are fighting all around you. And after surviving that, you have to distribute the loot among the rest of the grubby fisted thieves, backstabbing scoundrels and murderous mercenaries you employ."
Matt's face turned white as a sheet.
"Same goes for Simon, but I think he already knows. And as the grubbiest fisted thief among us, I suspect he can do at least the last part of the job just fine."

- I could go as a captain, but I'm not interested. I had my fair share of combat, but I'm more of a scholar than a warrior.- That was a big lie, as Zayl was the first assassin of Fortrind. He had the best trainers avaivable. However, stealth was his greatest ally.- also, I'm a lousy sailor.

And speaking purely for myself, I'm not convinced of your skills as capitan. And whatever the outcome may be, expect me to give you the same leeway I gave Vorshaw and every other officer I served under before him. None whatsoever. Every mistake you'll make, I'll rub under your nose. Because every mistake made on this ship from now on, is your mistake. Every problem is your problem now. And you and only you are the one who is supposed to fix that. It is the first rule of leadership."

Simon's voice became hardened and dead serious."Trust me, I know. If I fail, it is my fault. If I trust in the wrong person, mine is the back that will get knifed. If I let a man under me die," Simon stood up. "then his death is on my shoulders. I might not be the best man in your eyes, but trust me, I've led men before. I know the consequences of failure. I know what mistakes to avoid. But sometimes, Eduardo, a leader has to lie to his men to keep them happy, to keep them safe, to keep them alive."
He gave Eduardo a cheerful smile, "So thank you for calling me a liar. I like to know that I have the skill down pat and that I'm still a good entertainer. Davian, I'm ready to go."
