I like the normal combat in the game that makes up 99% of the game, at least in Act1. Unfortunately the Act 1 boss (the kayren) is a quick time event fight. Trying not to give any spoilers.... When I finish the first phase of the battle the next phase is a quick time event. From watching videos on you tube I see that during that phase I'm supposed to get a prompt to press the space bar. That prompt never comes so I keep repeating that part of the fight over and over an over and over until I finally quit.
I hate gimmicky boss battles and it looks like not only is this one gimmicky but also bugged for me. I spent some time on it yesterday and again today. I'll try one more time before I shelf the game.

The QTEs in this game aren't really hard at all... they give you a lot of time to react.
Don't remember any space bar press in that one, it's generally just the two mouse buttons that are used. Ohh wait maybe it's the jump prompt... yeah maybe...
If you find it that hard it might be bugged, I did that QTE on the first try (had a ****-load of trouble with getting that far though... didn't realize how easy it was to trick the Kayran)
Overall I don't think they've overdone the QTEs, which is good. They add a bit of cinematic thrill now and then without disturbing the gameplay too much.

Quote: So is it better than the first game? Because frankly, I was a little disappointed by the Witcher #1.
Depends on what part you ask about
story - yes
navigation and controls - hell no
combat - different, I'd say better because it's less abusive (but a lot less good looking too)
character development - no

I did some reading on the STEAM forum and found that others who had that problem dropped the resolution down and then the QTE worked. So that is what I did and it worked. Geralt gained two levels (level 12) and put both talent points into Igni. Time to play with some fireballs.
Someone also posted a patch is due out today and one next week. The developers say this first patch will improve frame rate 5-30%. ATI should be coming out with updated drivers soon too.

The biggest complaint I have is the length of the game. It's really short.

EDIT: Didn't notice any difference with the new drivers btw, but it was mainly aimed towards Crossfire users I've read.

I ain't got no patch.
Quote: The good news is that the patch is ready. The bad news is that we have encountered some problems with the server infrastructure, making downloading DLCs impossible. We want to apologize to our fans for not meeting our target of delivering the patch last night. We will update you when we know more.
Man they really gotta fix their servers... it messes up everything for them haha
EDIT: Found the patch notes on the GoG forums...

RAM: 3 GB Windows XP, 4 GB Windows Vista/7
Graphics: GeForce 260 1 GB or (HD4850 1 GB)
HDD Space: 16 GB
-------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Patch 1.1 Corrections
1. The process of installing and activating the game is now easier and more stable. SECUROM copy protection has been removed entirely, making the game DRM free!
2. The “Troll Trouble” DLC package is included in the patch, bringing to an end any and all problems related to downloading this content.
3. Problems related to downloading other free DLC have also been resolved. The game launcher now correctly detects and updates specific modules.
4. Game efficiency has been improved. Game now runs 5-30% more efficiently and game loading has been accelerated. Efficiency increases will vary depending on system configuration and game version. Owners of boxed versions of The Witcher 2 are likely to notice the greatest improvements.
5. Bugs causing the game to crash, especially while saving game progress or loading saved games, have been corrected.
6. Movement key mapping has been expanded to include cursor (arrow) and number pad keys.
7. Options have been added for inverting the X and Y axes of the mouse.
8. NVidia 3D Vision Surround now works correctly with the game.
9. The hardware configuration auto-detect function has been corrected, resulting in improved game efficiency.
10. A bug preventing the completion of the “Blood Curse” quest has been corrected.
11. After beating the GOG.com penitent monk in the mini-game, the relevant link now displays correctly.
12. GOG.com credits have been corrected.
If you have encountered problems not covered by any of the fixes listed above, please bear with us. We are working a second patch, designed to correct another set of problems and bugs, including those related to specific hardware, e.g. Logitech G35 headsets. Look for the next patch towards the end of May.
EDIT2:
Found the patch for us boxed-game users, it's on the official forums.

Mine is 15MB.
It's probably Steam thinking your installation is damaged somehow, and therefore wants to re-install almost the entire thing.

Man, they removed the DRM! I like these guys more and more, I almost want to buy a second copy of the game just to show them that they are on the right path.
As for the patch - I wonder if it fixed the random monster disappearances after loading. This is my only complaint from the game's technical performance so far (apart from one small graphic bug).

Finished the game
Game felt way too short, and I believe this was mostly because the end came so abruptly. At the end of the last chapter I felt like half the game must still be waiting.
I don't really feel like anything got resolved either... I mean, the next Witcher is bound to be epic since there's a lot of room for story now... but still... some sorta closure would've been appreciated.
Apparentely there are 4 different endings, but these can differ somewhat and totals up to about 16 different endings.
Not sure just why mine ended why it did. I mean, there was no real closure cutscene as in The Witcher 1 where all the consequences of your actions were explained.
Still... the journey to the end was beyond awesome, but still... a bit short. Will use the game guide for my 2nd playthrough to get all the quests, I bet I missed a lot of them.
EDIT: My bonus DLC was the Ultimate Swordsman Suit which I am yet to receive, but I don't really care about that... the Finisher pack though... that one would be awesome...
Think I can send CDPRED an email to get the Finisher pack instead?
EDIT2: I just realized I've missed an entire town! I mean, I only got to see part of Vergen! Ah... that must be the Iorveth path... now I see... 1/2 of the game is still waiting to be played! REPLAY VALUE MAN!

From what I've read on the STEAM boards those email addresses send you a link to download the DLC without checking if you are "entitled" to it or not. I don't know if that was an oversight on the company's side or if they decided to release all the DLC to everyone earlier than planned. They had said all their DLC is going to be free to everyone.

I didn't put a point into Quen and it still saved my ass against most bosses, can only imagine how useful it could be otherwise
They should boost parry and nerf Quen imo... let Geralt parry even a Golem's strike if his defense is high enough.
@Elodin: Wow, so I can pretty much send an email to all of them? Cool... but I don't wanna cheat CDPRED... I hope it's what they intended.
