But it's the fact that we see Dungeon units above ground all the time.
I am not fond of Raptor Riders either, just listed them as possible units. In my lineup, I am not having them as units.

To my knowledge, that concept is abandoned.
Dungeon is now a classed society. As shown by this quote from the Discover Dungeon page
Quote: all Dark Elves are imprinted by Malassa’s mark and constantly forced to hear the constant whispers carried away by the shadows.
There are those who can channel this permanent flow of information, and those who can’t, and this divides the Dark Elf society into two classes.
The Dark Elves that can’t bear the constant whispers imposed by Malassa’s mark are forced to erect a barrier to shield themselves from the rest of the world, lest they turn insane. To help them live with Malassa’s gift, thev burn specific varieties of mushrooms and inhale the vapours. The medicine is like an anaesthetic that shuts their mind away from the ceaseless noise.
awwww that is sad news. I absolutely loved the matriarchy system in H5 and was looking forward to it's return. That is also why I would be really excited if the Shadow Witches would return. My personal dream line up would be.
Core
Assasin/Scout - H6 style one also like Stalkers in H5
Blood Fury/Chakram Dancer - I would be ok with any of them. Strike or return or core level shooter
Minotaur - core tankish unit similar to H5 or H3
Elite
Manticore - loved those from H6.
Shadow Witch - shooter and spellcaster of the tier
Hydra - Tank with regen and multiple target attack. Unlimited retaliation perhaps? Depends on the dmg output. If it would be fairly low then unlimited retal would be compensating.
Champion
Black Dragon
Faceless - spellcaster and hit and return as it was in H6.
I would be ok with Hydra switching spots with Faceless as a champion alternative. I don't consider beholders as iconic unit so I didn't include them. They were great but I never missed them. The line up has 3 elven units and (imo) most iconic and versitile mythological creature units.

How to Make a Dungeon Lineup (II edition)
First, you need Shadow Dragons. Shadow Dragons upgrade to Black Dragons, and you need to continually remind your artists that Black Dragons have skin wings and not butterfly-like. If you turn your back on them for a moment, they'll draw them with butterfly wings and then you have to take a drink.
Secondly, you have seven more unit slots to fill. All of them will be filled with Elves. These are interchangeable dudes, who are pale.
Each of your Elves needs to be visually distinct. Not distinct enough that you could tell what they were or what they do from the art alone, but distinct enough that the game can be played and you can tell the units apart while you are playing it. This can take the form of one or more phyiscal traits and or held objects. Physical traits are chosen from the Dungeon Physical Trait List, and held objects are chosen from the Dungeon Held Objects List.
Dungeon Physical Traits List
• Pointier ears
• Long skirts
• Tattered trousers
• Crowns
• Long hair
• Boobs
• Purple garments
• Masks
• Chains
• Skimpy clothes
Dungeon Held Objects List
• Whip
• Crossbow
• Daggers
• Axes
• Spears
• Chakram
Now, no matter what selections you've made from the traits and held objects lists, you will need to assign your non-Dragon units to various power levels and combat roles. It is important to remember that there is absolutely no correlation at all between the appearance choices you have made and these mundane game mechanical concerns. If you choose to have a unit that has Long skirts, Boobs, and a Whip, that can be a low tier ranged unit as in Heroes 6 or a high tier melee unit as in Armored Princess. It really makes no difference at all, so simply make sure you fill all niches.
Niche Requirements:
• 3 Core Creatures
• 3 Elite Creatures
• 2 Champion Creatures
• At least 1 Ranged creature in both Core and Elite categories.
• At least 1 Melee creature in Core.
• At least 1 Skirmish creature
• At least 1 Support creature.
Finally, assign dark elvish names to things. These have very limited constraints. First, if you have elected to give an Dungeon unit the "Boobs" trait, it must also have a feminine name. Good choices are things like "Mistress" and "Fury". Secondly, if you want to assign a name that is "high rank" such as "Slayer" or "Prophet" that unit has to be Elite or Champion. But remember, any of these units can still be Melee, Ranged, Skirmish, or Support.
Following these step by step instructions, you can make a formulaic Dungeon faction list that will be exactly as interesting and memorable as the Dungeon faction list from every other Heroes or King's Bounty title that they have appeared in.

Thank you, War-overlord. It doesn't sound like we know for sure, since the introduction of this new class system doesn't necessarily exclude a matriarchy, but since it's not clear that the matriarchy is still around, that certainly makes it seem very likely that they've abandoned, or at least have moved away from, the idea.
This does slightly alter the line-up I've been thinking about, but only negligibly. Just to put this out there, in case Ubi decides to return to the matriarchal concept for Dungeon or for any other faction, please try to make what's supposed to be a matriarchy an actual matriarchy. I'm not against the idea of Dungeon being matriarchal, but between the sexualized Dark Elves of H5 and the fact that the majority of leaders seem to be men, the concept has been very poorly thought-out.

I think the matriarch concept didnt even survive the H5 beta. I mean we have the matriarch units but story wise they didnt seem to be a matriarchy.
The Shadow Matriarch concept seens to have been reworked intow the Shadow Sorceress/Sorcerer.

Maybe DE became matriarchal somewhere between H7 and H5. A lot can happen in time-skips.

No, they didn't. These matriarchs became Keepers of the Law in H5 - they are responsible for keeping rulers in clans and for example choosing clanlords according to Dark Elves laws.
Ylaya - DE hero of H5:FoH and ToE is one of them.
I think Ubisoft screapped that D&D matriarchy rip-off somewhere during H5 development.

nah. I still think Dungeon is a matriarchal society.
Notice how all their higher-ups are women: Malassa, Malassa's daughter, Tuidhana. Yeah, I get that Tuidhana's sons were leaders of the three strongest clans but Tuidhana also had 3 daughters to begin with.
Maybe the daughters got their clans destroyed and the sons ruled their clans better? That still doesn't rule out the fact that it is a matriarchal society. Maybe below the sons are a horde of female supervisors, you know what I mean?

Well there is a difference between minor retcons and contradictions.
I have to agree with Avonu. Devs probably started with matriarchy but for one reason or another they decided to scrap it.
There are probably some positions or groups in Malassa's priesthood that are mostly or entirely female, but the opposite is also possible. The keepers are probably one of the "female positions," so might the shadow witches of H5 be specific covens and groups. Might there be male members in these gropus, male counterparts or different only/mostly male positions in Malassas temple. Probably.

male-only? Not gonna happen. The Dark Elf feminists would protest against it.
I'm pretty sure Shadow Matriarchs are female-only though. That's why it's Matriarch, not some gender-neutralarch or something.

Evil eyes
Elite:
Manticores
Minotaur
Shadow witch
Champion:
Hydra
Black Dragon
Get some colour variation in there of course. Green slimy trogs. Vicious golden manticores with big proud manes, then a dark, segmented stinger. Then bring back the Deep Hydras of H5 and I am cheering
